What is Poplin?

What is poplin and what can be sewn from it?

In our shelves, Poplin is often found. Why I love it and how it differs from regular cotton fabric - read below.

Pss....if you're too lazy to read long - then in a few words: Our store offers 100% cotton that is softer and less wrinkled than regular woven cotton fabric.

WHAT IS POPLIN FABRIC?

Cotton or silk fabric in canvas weave, where the weft threads are significantly thinner than the warp threads. (Latvian Literary Language Dictionary. 1.–8. Riga, Science, 1972.–1996.)

Poplin can be made from many fibers, but the most common types are made from cotton or a blend of cotton and polyester. Our shelves only have 100% cotton poplin.

The name originates from France. The fabric name dates back to the 19th and 20th centuries when women sought practical and budget-friendly fabrics. Women needed dress fabrics that not only looked good but were also comfortable to wear all day long.

Nowadays, 100% cotton poplin is one of the most widely used fabrics in the world.

Poplin fabric is a thin yet durable fabric, which is why it is very popular among sewing enthusiasts.

Cotton poplin fabric (Popeline) stands out with its visually smooth weave. This means that the threads are woven alternately over and under, which makes poplin a tightly woven cotton fabric that has good durability.

      SEWING AND CUTTING

Poplin is a suitable fabric for beginners. It is stable enough and thin - it will be manageable for most household sewing machines.

Be careful when cutting so that the airy fabric does not get distorted.

It's better to use clips instead of pins (you can leave the needle holes).

Sewing cotton poplin is easy, I recommend using a wider stitch and sewing with universal sewing needles 80/12.

Threads for sewing machines and overlocks are used Amanda Arena 120 (view the shades here)

The small helper for straight seams is this magnet-view.

If you have an overlock, finish the edges with it.

French file is another good option - how to sew it like that watch the video

If you don't have an overlocker and don't want to sew French seams, use a zigzag stitch.

I hope my tips for sewing poplin were helpful and will inspire you to create beautiful and natural things that will bring you joy and delight others.
