How to sew a hat?

Hi, dear autumn! When the weather finally starts to cool down and the leaves change colors, it means that one of the most beautiful seasons has begun!

Autumn comes, not only with colors and harvest but also with the inspiration to start something new. Why not with sewing a new hat?

Sew for yourself, for children, or gift to loved ones. The hat pattern is suitable for both big and small.

Below is a picture of one of the first hats. Taken in 2018. Ah... such warm feelings overwhelm me as I immerse myself in pictures of little children.

Required time: ~20 minutes, sewing a fifth hat will have sharpened your skills and will only take you 10 minutes.

YOU WILL NEED:

Hat pattern
approximately 0.3 m x 1.5 m fabric with good elasticity if you sew from 2 colors, then 0.3 m for the lining and 0.3 m for the top fabric
sewing machine or overlock

PRINT AND CUT THE PATTERN

Measure the circumference of your head and choose the right size.

I sewed size 54 for myself, for Ralf (6 years old) as well, but for my youngest son (3 years old) I sewed size 50.

FABRIC

You can sew hats from any fabric with good elasticity. If you don't have any extra fabric at home, remember that you can always repurpose an old sweater that you no longer wear.

In my case, the boys at the "mom's fabric store" have plenty of fabric.

Ralfam sewn from organic looped jersey.

For Edgariņš made of thin knitwear and lined with organic loop knitwear.

If the fabric is stiffer, choose a larger size for a looser hat.

CUT 4 PIECES. IF YOU WANT A LINING IN ANOTHER COLOR, THEN CUT 2 PIECES IN ONE COLOR AND 2 IN ANOTHER

The seam allowance is not included in the pattern! Before cutting, I recommend adding about 1 cm.

GET STARTED WITH SEWING

You can sew with a sewing machine or an overlock.

If you are sewing with a sewing machine, I recommend using elastic threads; if you don't have any at home, set the sewing machine to a zig-zag stitch, adjust to a shallow zig-zag, but make sure that when stretching the fabric, the stitch does not break.

I sewed with the BERNINA L 460 overlocker, because since I got an overlocker at home, I sew a lot of things specifically with the overlocker, as it is more convenient and faster for me.

SEW EDGES

Sew - leaving a ~5 cm opening. After sewing, the hat is ironed and turned inside out.
