Cotton knit, or Cotton jersey is a soft, stretchy, and comfortable knit fabric for sewing clothing. It is also often called jersey fabric, cotton jersey, or Single Jersey. Unlike classic woven cotton fabrics, Jersey is knitted, so it is more elastic, fits the body better, and allows greater ease of movement.

Fine cotton knit is smooth and soft. Cotton makes the fabric breathable and pleasant against the skin, while the Jersey structure gives it stretch. With elastane added to the fabric, it stretches even better and returns to its original shape after wearing.

What is Cotton Jersey fabric suitable for?

Cotton knit is especially suitable for sewing everyday and children's clothing. Jersey fabric can be used to sew:

T-shirts, underwear, tops, dresses, skirts, leggings, pajamas, children's clothing, bodysuits, hats, scarves, homewear, sportswear, and leisurewear.

It is an excellent fabric for T-shirts and children's clothing, because it is soft, stretchy, and does not restrict movement. Cotton Jersey of different weights can be used for both light summer clothing and heavier everyday garments.

How do you sew cotton Jersey?

When sewing stretch knit fabric, it is recommended to use a Jersey or Stretch sewing machine needle. For thinner and medium-weight Jersey, a 70/10 or 80/12 needle is usually suitable.

Use a stretch stitch, narrow zigzag stitch, or overlock for seams so that the seam can stretch with the fabric and not break during wear.

Before sewing, it is recommended to wash the cotton knit according to the care instructions for the specific fabric, as natural cotton fibers may shrink slightly after the first wash.
