DPx17 SPI, 135x17 SPI are SCHMETZ industrial sewing machine needles with a sharp, slim round point, designed for tightly woven, lightweight, and delicate fabrics. The SPI point helps pierce the material precisely, create an even stitch line, and reduce the risk of seam puckering.
SPI point features
SPI (Acute Round Point) is an especially sharp, slim round needle point with a fine tapered shape. It enables precise piercing of tightly woven and certain coated materials.
The SPI point is suitable for sewing tasks that require precise needle penetration and a neat seam appearance. Its special shape helps reduce seam puckering, especially when working with delicate and tightly woven fabrics.
Suitable materials and applications
- Very tightly woven fabrics.
- Microfiber fabrics.
- Silk and fine silk fabrics.
- Lightweight, smooth fabrics such as taffeta.
- Lightweight coated materials.
- Decorative topstitching on shirt collars and cuffs.
- Materials with uncoated elastomeric threads when precise piercing is required.
- Some fur and leather sewing applications for which the manufacturer specifies an SPI point.

Compatibility and needle selection
These needles are designed for industrial sewing machines that use the DPx17 or 135x17 system. Before purchasing, check your sewing machine manual and choose an NM size suited to the fabric structure, thread, and stitch type.
Important: The sharp SPI point is not universally suitable for knits, as it may damage the loops. Knits usually require an appropriate rounded point, such as SES or SUK. Test the needle on a fabric sample before sewing.
